US Envoy Urges UN to Expand Arms Embargo in Sudan Amid Escalating Conflict

The senior Africa envoy for US President Donald Trump has requested the United Nations to broaden its arms embargo from Darfur to encompass all of Sudan, citing concerns that the ongoing war could extend beyond the country's borders.

Massad Boulos emphasized the need for the UN Security Council to prevent external military support, including drones, from reaching Sudan. The conflict, now in its fourth year, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced 14 million people. However, implementing a wider embargo would require a Security Council vote, which faces resistance from Russia and China, who argue it would undermine Sudan's military capabilities.

As discussions continued at the Security Council, reports emerged of drone strikes by the Sudanese army targeting positions held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, a key logistics hub. The ongoing violence has been marked by the heavy use of drones, with UN officials documenting significant civilian casualties. Boulos proposed increasing monitoring of the embargo and addressing external influences that exacerbate the conflict.
