U.S. Government Finalizes Water Supply Reductions for California, Nevada, and Arizona
On August 21, the U.S. government announced a finalized plan to reduce water supplies to California, Nevada, and Arizona as part of efforts to manage the drought-affected Colorado River.
The three lower basin states will experience a 21 percent reduction in water allocations for the years 2027 and 2028, with the possibility of cuts nearly doubling in subsequent years. Arizona and Nevada have expressed concerns that such increases could severely impact their economies, with Arizona considering legal action against the federal government if these cuts are implemented.
In contrast, the upper basin states, including Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming, will not face mandatory reductions. The Colorado River is a crucial water source for approximately one in ten Americans, supporting significant agricultural production and power generation across seven states. The plan includes a total reduction of 1.6 million acre-feet per year for the lower basin states over the two-year period, with potential for further cuts to maintain reservoir levels.
