US Justice Department Files Lawsuit Against California Over Mail Ballots
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against California, requesting a federal judge to block the counting of mail ballots for the upcoming midterm elections from more than 20,000 voters identified as likely noncitizens. This legal action was taken on October 15, as part of the Trump administration's efforts to increase federal oversight in elections.
The lawsuit aims to prevent California from tabulating mail-in ballots until the immigration status of these voters is verified. The Justice Department claims that the Department of Homeland Security identified these individuals by comparing voter rolls with its internal databases. California officials, including Secretary of State Shirley Weber, have expressed concerns about the potential for naturalized citizens to be incorrectly flagged as noncitizens.
Voting rights advocates have raised alarms about the implications of this lawsuit, particularly regarding the potential for mass purges of voter rolls. Legal experts suggest that the lawsuit may encounter significant challenges, as federal authority over state election processes is limited.
