UTSA Basketball Coach Austin Claunch Suspended Following DWI Arrest
Austin Claunch, the head coach of the UTSA basketball team, has been suspended after being arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, as announced by the university on Wednesday. With the season opener against San Jose State approaching, assistant coach Nick Bowman will serve as the interim coach while the university reviews the situation.
In a statement, Claunch expressed regret for his actions and acknowledged the disappointment caused to his players, colleagues, and the university community. He emphasized his understanding of the responsibilities that come with his position and his commitment to learning from this incident.
Claunch, who previously served as an assistant coach at Alabama, took over the UTSA program in 2024 and has a record of 17-44 over two seasons. The Roadrunners had a challenging season last year, finishing with a 5-25 record.
