VAR Officials Not Assigned for Upcoming Premier League Matches
The video assistant referee for the Manchester derby, Matt Donohue, and his assistant Blake Antrobus, will not be officiating in this weekend's Premier League matches. This decision was made by Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer of the Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref.
This follows an admission from Pro Ref regarding an error in judgment concerning Erling Haaland's winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United. Haaland scored in the 60th minute after his initial goal was disallowed for offside, but VAR later ruled him onside.
There was controversy surrounding the play, as City midfielder Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and appeared to interfere with play. Pro Ref stated that while Fernandez did not touch the ball, the VAR should have recognized the potential impact of his position and recommended a review.
