Venezuela Aid Worker Reports Extensive Damage from Earthquakes
Anna Fraine, a programme manager for the Disasters Emergency Committee, is coordinating emergency relief efforts in Venezuela following two devastating earthquakes in June. Based in Caracas, she noted the unprecedented level of destruction she has witnessed, stating that 6,500 people have died and over 86,000 require medical treatment.
Fraine reported that in La Guaira, up to 80% of buildings have been severely damaged or destroyed. She emphasized the resilience of the Venezuelan people, who are facing this crisis amid ongoing hardships. The DEC has raised more than £23 million for its earthquake appeal, which is being used to provide food, medical care, and restore water systems in affected communities.
Fraine, who has experience responding to humanitarian crises in Myanmar and Ukraine, reflected on her work and the importance of global community support during disasters.
