Verstappen and COTA Boss Clash Over Track Bumps
Max Verstappen and Bobby Epstein, the boss of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), have expressed differing views regarding the track's notorious bumps as they head into the race weekend. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, acknowledged his fondness for the Texas circuit but pointed out that the bumps could potentially harm drivers.
Verstappen's comments were echoed by fellow drivers Lando Norris and George Russell, although they did not mention any risk of spinal injury. Epstein responded to Verstappen's remarks, stating that the circuit was unaware of the issues until recently and had already addressed many bumps during a resurfacing two years ago. He acknowledged a specific dip at Turn 1 but differentiated it from a bump, asserting that it would require a different approach to fix.
Following practice sessions, Verstappen reiterated his concerns about the track's condition, particularly at Turns 1 and 19, and the fast section between Turns 4 and 5. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the track's foundation rather than temporary fixes, suggesting that the FIA and Formula 1 should enforce stricter standards for safety.
