
Veterinarian Advocates for Aviary Preservation in Southport Botanic Gardens
A veterinarian has voiced strong opposition to the planned closure of an aviary at the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown, Southport, which is set to shut in March due to funding cuts from Sefton Council. The council has decided to withdraw approximately £60,000 in annual support, claiming the facility is no longer in the best interests of the animals.
Peter W Scott, a veterinarian and former zoo inspector, criticized the decision, stating that relocating the birds would not enhance their lives. He emphasized the aviary's role in providing a safe environment for around 170 birds and serving as a valuable community resource for nearly 90 years. Ann Cobham, a volunteer at the gardens, echoed these sentiments, expressing concern over the negative impact the closure would have on the community.
