Victor Wembanyama Struggles in Spurs Opener Against Thunder
In the Spurs' season opener on Tuesday, Victor Wembanyama faced difficulties, shooting only 7.7% from the field in a home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Wembanyama, who is viewed as a leading candidate for the Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards for the 2026/27 season, expressed his need to return to his preferred style of play after the game. Despite his shooting struggles, he managed to collect 13 rebounds and block six shots.
Thunder's Chet Holmgren displayed a more aggressive approach against Wembanyama compared to their previous playoff encounters, while rookie Aday Mara also made notable plays, including blocking a dunk attempt. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson noted that the entire team faced shooting challenges, not just Wembanyama.
