Vikings Consider Carson Wentz as Backup After J.J. McCarthy's Struggles

After J.J. Analyst Ben Leber suggested this possibility, highlighting the need for a reliable option should Murray be sidelined.

Vikings reporter Alec Lewis noted that McCarthy, who took all the second-team reps in joint practices, had inconsistent performances. If McCarthy continues to struggle, Wentz's more polished play could make him the logical choice for the backup role. The Vikings are also focused on developing McCarthy, a first-round draft pick, despite concerns about head coach Kevin O’Connell's job security.

O’Connell is working to adapt the Vikings' offense to better suit Murray's skills, which will differ significantly from last season's approach. The team plans to implement more shotgun formations and adjust the passing game to leverage Murray's strengths, as they aim to improve after not winning a playoff game since 2019.
