Vikings May Relegate J.J. McCarthy to QB3 Role

Recent developments indicate that J.J. McCarthy's role with the Minnesota Vikings could be diminished, as head coach Kevin O’Connell may assign him to QB3 duties behind veteran Carson Wentz and current QB1 Kyler Murray.

During an 80-minute practice session, McCarthy and Wentz shared time with the second-string offense. McCarthy notably threw a touchdown pass to Tai Felton, but his performance in a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens raised concerns, where he completed 5 of 10 passes for 81 yards.

Insider Mike Florio pointed out that McCarthy's position on the roster is not guaranteed, especially with the impending roster cuts. The Vikings might consider trading him, given his guaranteed salary for the next two years, but they may also have to release him if a trade does not materialize.
