Vince McMahon's Choice of Rio for IC Title Tournament Linked to Pat Patterson's Accent
In 1979, WWE introduced the Intercontinental Championship, claiming Pat Patterson defeated Johnny Rodz in a fictional tournament held in Rio De Janeiro. Patterson received the title directly after this event, despite losing the North American Heavyweight Championship three months later.
John 'Bradshaw' Layfield revealed that Vince McMahon selected Rio De Janeiro as the tournament's location because Patterson struggled to pronounce it due to his French accent, describing it as a playful jab at Patterson.
Patterson remained a significant figure in WWE until his death in December 2020, contributing to various aspects of the organization, including the Royal Rumble match. His influence is acknowledged by Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, who regarded Patterson as a key figure in the wrestling industry.
Currently, the legacy of Patterson is upheld through the Intercontinental Championship, held by Chad Gable, who won it at SummerSlam in August. Gable is scheduled to defend the title against Rey Fenix on an upcoming episode of RAW.
