Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Undergoes Laser Eye Surgery
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the first baseman for the Blue Jays, has recently undergone laser eye surgery, as confirmed by the Laser Eye Center of Miami and Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. The exact timing of the surgery remains unclear, but it is expected not to interfere with Guerrero's offseason preparations.
The 27-year-old player faced a challenging season in 2026, the first year of his 14-year, $500 million contract extension signed in April 2025. Over 144 games, he recorded a batting average of .260 with nine home runs, resulting in a below-average wRC+ of 95. His power metrics, including a career-low slugging percentage of .356 and ISO of .096, indicated a significant decline.
Guerrero experienced several slumps throughout the season, impacting his overall performance. While he had a strong start with a wRC+ of 158 in April, he struggled in subsequent months, particularly in June with a wRC+ of 37. Despite some recovery in July and September, he never regained his typical power levels. The surgery may address issues with pitch recognition that contributed to his difficulties, which the Blue Jays hope will lead to an improved performance in 2027.
