This contract, which will take effect in the 2027-28 season, was reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The Capitals opted to finalize this deal before new rules regarding contract lengths and structures come into play, which will limit extensions to a maximum of seven years.

Leonard, who was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 draft, has been recognized as a top prospect. He scored 20 goals and 45 points in 75 games during his rookie season, finishing eighth in Calder Trophy voting. Despite his potential, the Capitals' roster changes may limit his immediate opportunities for a larger role.
