West Coast Eagles Release Matt Owies Ahead of Contract Expiration
West Coast Eagles have announced the delisting of Matt Owies, who was under contract until 2027. Owies joined the team at the end of 2024 after a successful season with Carlton, where he scored a career-high 33 goals.
However, his performance with the Eagles did not meet expectations, as he managed only seven goals in 16 games last year and played just three times in 2026. Alongside Owies, fellow forward Harvey Johnston was also delisted, prompting the Eagles to consider acquiring smaller forwards in the upcoming National Draft.
List Boss Matt Clarke noted that discussions with Owies indicated his openness to leaving the club and returning to Victoria. Clarke expressed gratitude for Owies' contributions over the past two years, while Owies reflected positively on his time with the Eagles and wished the club future success.
