The Chicago White Sox held a unique 'Pope Hat' promotion at Rate Field on a humid Tuesday night, celebrating their notable fan, Pope Leo XIV. The event coincided with a game against the Cincinnati Reds, where the team distributed almost 40,000 mitre hats featuring their logo.

The game attracted a sellout crowd of 38,113 attendees, with the hats quickly becoming a hot item, fetching around $70 on eBay during the match. The promotion was initiated by marketing executive Mike Downey and expanded significantly from an initial giveaway of 2,500 hats after high demand was noted.

Fans embraced the theme, donning hats and costumes, while the team showcased signs referencing players. Special guests included former pitcher Donn Pall and Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, who led a blessing after the fifth inning. Despite the festive atmosphere, the White Sox lost the game 5-4 in 10 innings, marking a disappointing end to the celebration.
