White Sox Designate Joe Rock for Assignment

The Chicago White Sox have designated left-handed pitcher Joe Rock for assignment to accommodate the waiver claim of catcher Jake Rogers.

Rock, who is 26 years old, was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in May in exchange for infielder Oliver Dunn. Since joining the White Sox, he has made only four appearances in the major leagues, yielding four earned runs over 10 1/3 innings, with 12 strikeouts but also 11 walks, two hit batters, and one wild pitch.

Control issues have plagued Rock throughout the season, as evidenced by his performance in Triple-A, where he posted a 6.89 earned run average over 32 2/3 innings. Despite a solid strikeout rate of 28.1% and a ground ball rate of 50.6%, he has walked 31 batters, resulting in an 18.1% walk rate. Following the trade deadline, he will be placed on waivers, and he remains optionable for the remainder of the year, with one more option year available.
