White Sox Prospect Caleb Bonemer to Play Center Field in Minors

The Chicago White Sox are assigning top prospect Caleb Bonemer to play center field in the minor leagues, as confirmed by assistant GM Josh Barfield. This transition will occur through the remainder of the Double-A season and into the Arizona Fall League.

Bonemer, who was drafted as a shortstop in 2024, has primarily played infield positions but is being developed for versatility. With Colson Montgomery currently at shortstop and the arrival of 2026's number one overall pick Roch Cholowsky, Bonemer's future at that position appears limited. He has demonstrated strong offensive capabilities, hitting 33 home runs with a .249/.381/.556 batting line across High-A and Double-A.

In addition to Bonemer's positional shift, Drew Thorpe is making progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery and is expected to start for Triple-A Charlotte soon. Meanwhile, Kyle Teel is also heading to Charlotte for a rehab stint, aiming for an early September return after recovering from an ankle injury. The White Sox are currently managing their roster amid injuries and performance issues.
