Williams Racing Initiates Legal Action Over Missing FW23 Chassis
A legal dispute has emerged in London's High Court involving Williams Racing and a local garage owner over a missing Williams FW23 chassis. The team claims that the rare vehicle, valued at approximately £750,000, vanished after being loaned to Autotech Performance Ltd for promotional purposes.
The FW23 chassis, which played a significant role in the team's 2001 Formula 1 season, was loaned to the garage until it entered liquidation in 2021. Williams Racing alleges that Peter Thorpe, a former director of Autotech, wrongfully claimed ownership of the chassis and removed it before the team could retrieve it.
Williams Racing is seeking the return of the chassis or financial compensation exceeding £1 million. Thorpe's defense counters that he never claimed ownership and attributes the missing vehicle to his health issues following a stroke in 2018. His legal team also disputes the valuation of the chassis, arguing it was merely a display shell without an engine. The team has not commented further on the ongoing litigation.
