Wirral Council Proposes Changes to Green Bin Collections
Wirral Council is exploring a proposal to alter the frequency of green bin collections, potentially affecting around 142,000 households. Under the new plan, green bins for general household waste could be emptied every three weeks instead of the current fortnightly schedule.
The council estimates that this change could lead to annual savings of approximately £1.2 million in collection costs. The decision follows a reduction in waste placed in green bins due to weekly food waste collections. A public consultation is set to take place from 14 October to 24 November, with a final decision expected in 2027.
The council noted that separating food waste from general rubbish could also minimize unpleasant odors from decaying waste. While the proposal is seen as the most cost-effective option, the council previously considered replacing green bins with smaller ones but deemed that approach too costly and disruptive. There will be no changes to grey recycling bins, weekly food waste collections, or brown garden waste bins.
