Xavi Hernandez has been appointed as the new coach of the Netherlands national soccer team, aiming to revitalize the squad after a lackluster World Cup showing. The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder expressed his desire to shift the team's playing style towards a more dominant approach.

During his introduction, Xavi referenced the influential 'total football' philosophy of Johan Cruyff, indicating his ambition to instill a team characterized by passion and initiative. He was selected from a shortlist of candidates, including notable figures like Pep Guardiola and Arne Slot, both of whom declined the position.

Xavi's first challenge will be a match against Germany on September 24 in Amsterdam, where he will face off against new German coach Jürgen Klopp. Previously, Xavi had been without a coaching role since leaving Barcelona in May 2024, and he replaces Ronald Koeman, who departed after the World Cup.
