Yankees' Anthony Volpe's Home Run Overturned Due to Fan Interference
In Game 3 of the ALDS, Anthony Volpe of the Yankees appeared to tie the game with a two-run home run against the Rays, but the call was overturned after a replay review. The officials determined that a fan had interfered by reaching over the left field wall to touch the ball, which was being pursued by Victor Mesa Jr.
As a result of the review, Volpe was credited with a run-scoring double instead of a home run. The Rays' manager, Kevin Cash, contested the decision, arguing it should have been ruled an out, but the officials upheld the interference ruling. According to MLB Rule 6.0.1(e), the interference was deemed intentional, leading to Volpe being placed at second base.
The replay center concluded that the ball would not have cleared the fence and would have remained in play. Consequently, George Lombard Jr., who was on first base, scored as he was running on contact with two outs. The Rays currently lead the series 2-0 and are aiming for a sweep in Game 3.
