Yankees Demote Anthony Volpe, Call Up George Lombard Jr.

Following a recent trade deadline move to strengthen their outfield, the New York Yankees have opted for a change in their infield by demoting shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In his place, the Yankees are reportedly promoting 21-year-old George Lombard Jr., who is expected to take over as the regular shortstop. Lombard has had a solid season in the minors, batting .268 with six home runs and 21 RBIs in 56 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Volpe, who won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2023, struggled this season, hitting .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 56 games. The Yankees also made additional roster changes, sending outfielder Jasson Dominguez and reliever Angel Chivilli to Triple-A after their recent loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
