Yankees Designate Justin Topa for Assignment Ahead of Max Fried's Return

The New York Yankees designated right-hander Justin Topa for assignment on Saturday, just four days after he was called up, to facilitate the return of Max Fried from the injured list.

This decision was made prior to Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, following a 6-0 loss in the first game. Topa had only been on the major league roster since Tuesday, having been promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 25.

Topa's brief tenure included two appearances, where he pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run. He had previously signed a minor league deal with the Yankees on August 14 after a stint with the Minnesota, Toronto, and Kansas City organizations. Fried, who had been on the injured list since August 17, was expected to start in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The Yankees won that game 9-2, maintaining their lead in the American League wild-card race.
