Yankees Likely to Offer Qualifying Deal to Bednar, Not Chisholm
The New York Yankees are anticipated to issue a qualifying offer to closer David Bednar, while they are less inclined to do the same for second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is expected to become a free agent.
The qualifying offer, set at $23.15 million this year, is a one-year deal that teams can extend to players who have spent the entire previous season on their roster. Bednar's strong performance in the latter part of the season has made him a prime candidate for this offer, as he posted a 2.39 ERA over 94 innings and excelled in save opportunities.
Chisholm, on the other hand, had a less productive season, batting .231 with 19 home runs. His performance has led the Yankees to believe he might accept a qualifying offer if extended, which they want to avoid. If Bednar declines the offer, the Yankees would receive a compensatory draft pick. The team is also considering other roster changes as they navigate the upcoming free agency period.
