Yankees Maintain Current Shortstop Situation Amid Lombard Jr. Speculation

The New York Yankees are sticking with their current shortstop arrangement as the trade deadline has passed, leaving the future of 21-year-old prospect George Lombard Jr. uncertain for now.

General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed that Anthony Volpe and José Caballero will continue to share the position, despite the Yankees' shortstops contributing only 0.8 bWAR this season. Lombard, who has excelled at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since returning from injury, is batting .268 with an .845 OPS over 56 games.

Cashman noted that while the team explored options to enhance their infield, no suitable trades materialized. He emphasized the team's confidence in their current players and hinted that Lombard's potential call-up could be necessary if they wish to evaluate his readiness for the major leagues before the playoffs.
