Yankees Set to Activate Clarke Schmidt from Injured List

The New York Yankees are anticipated to activate Clarke Schmidt from the 60-day injured list before their series finale against Minnesota on Wednesday. Manager Aaron Boone provided this update, indicating that adjustments will be necessary on both the active and 40-man rosters.

To accommodate Schmidt's return, the Yankees may consider moving Fernando Cruz, who has a partially torn UCL, to the 60-day injured list. Alternatively, they could recall Angel Chivilli from the Triple-A injured list or expose Chase Hampton to waivers. Schmidt, who has not pitched in the MLB since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2025, has made five rehab appearances, averaging 94.1 mph on his fastball.

While Schmidt will not have enough time to return as a starter this season, the Yankees envision him in that role for 2027. The team is currently evaluating their bullpen options for the postseason, with several middle relief spots available as they prepare for October games.
