Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando Fined for Colombo Test Incident
Yashasvi Jaiswal of India and Asitha Fernando from Sri Lanka have both been penalized 25% of their match fees due to an on-field altercation during the second Test in Colombo. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the sanctions on August 24 after both players acknowledged violating Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to inappropriate physical contact.
The incident took place during India's first innings when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal, who had scored 45 runs. Following the dismissal, Fernando's animated send-off led to a verbal exchange between the two players, escalating to a physical confrontation where their helmets made contact. Teammates and Sri Lanka's captain intervened to separate them before the situation worsened.
In response to the incident, Jaiswal took to social media, urging critics to refrain from judgment without understanding the context of the exchange. He emphasized the need to stand up against any provocation. Meanwhile, India's batting coach acknowledged that while the altercation may have occurred in the heat of the moment, Jaiswal should have avoided physical contact.
