According to James Ham, a reporter covering the team, Sacramento has communicated to LaVine that they do not foresee a long-term future together and are not interested in extending his contract. Prior to LaVine's decision, the team was open to a sign-and-trade arrangement, but that option is no longer viable.

Ham noted that while he would have considered a buyout for LaVine earlier in free agency, the Kings' general manager has not pursued this option. The team also has no plans to utilize the stretch provision on LaVine. Despite concerns about LaVine's defensive capabilities alongside rookie Darius Acuff Jr., Ham believes LaVine could still play a significant role if he contributes to the team's success.
