Zane Duursma Reflects on Challenging Seasons and Future Role with Melbourne
Zane Duursma, a recent recruit for Melbourne, has shared insights into the mental challenges he encountered during his two seasons with North Melbourne. The 21-year-old, who was selected as the fourth pick in the 2023 National Draft, struggled to find his footing while peers from his draft class excelled.
During his tenure with the Roos, Duursma participated in 38 matches, scoring 28 goals primarily as a forward. After the 2026 season, he sought a trade to Melbourne, despite efforts from new North Melbourne coach Jaymie Graham to persuade him to remain with the club.
Duursma acknowledged the mental strain of being a highly regarded player who was not meeting expectations, noting the support he received from psychologists and the AFL Players' Association. He expressed a desire for a fresh start with Melbourne, where he envisions a role that aligns with his skills, including playing as a half-forward and occasionally in the midfield. He was traded to Melbourne in exchange for Picks 33 and 49.
