Zeke Lau Surfs Rare Wave on Oahu's East Side Amid El Niño Conditions

Zeke Lau recently surfed at Makapu’u on the east side of Oahu, where tropical swells were impacting the coast. This opportunity arose during an historic El Niño, which has been generating numerous storms in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Typically, the right-hander at Makapu’u is affected by easterly winds, making it difficult to surf. However, on this occasion, northerly winds allowed for surfable conditions. Lau managed to navigate the wave's varying sections, finding tubes and executing turns, including a significant air maneuver.

Despite his successful session, Lau experienced nerve pain in his leg and mentioned he might not surf again soon. The ongoing El Niño could lead to more favorable surfing conditions in the future.
